Oct 3 & 4, 2015 – UNM Toas Printmaking Workshop

A Printmaking Workshop hosted by the University of New Mexico – Taos

This workshop is open to all who want to explore the magic of making prints, from the beginning process when one prepares a plate, lays paper over the plate, cranks the press, and lifts the print, to see one’s own creation. This will be a two-day workshop with an introduction to the materials and techniques used in making monotype prints. Monotypes are a spontaneous and simple approach to making an original one of a kind print. Basically, monotypes are a painting on a clean, un-etched plate transferred to a damp piece of paper by passing it through a press. Participants will make black and white prints on the first day of the workshop and color prints on the second day, exploring various ways of applying inks to a plate to create their images. This professional workshop is a great introduction to the art of printmaking and is open to young people and adults.

Pressing On began in 2010 with 8 printmakers, all of whom have printed at UNM Taos. The first show was held in a local gallery devoted to printmaking and since then, shows have been held each year from August to October in a number of pop-up galleries in Taos.

The mission for Pressing On is to expose the public to printmaking processes and exhibit new work from their artists’ oeuvre each year.

Pressing On 5, this year’s exhibit, will be held in the Stables Gallery at the Taos Center for The Arts and will also feature demonstrations with two presses showcasing a variety of printmaking techniques. Workshops for school children are also planned and will be taught by the Pressing On artists. The workshops are a wonderful opportunity for young people to learn about printmaking and create their own original prints.
